Bartel (Barney) Bartell
With the death of Bartel (Barney) Bartell, one of the most popular and well-beloved men, for many years a prominent citizen of the community, a successful career in life cam to a close. Mr. Bartell passed away at his home in Gifford last Friday morning at 8 o'clock. The departed had been ailing and failing for several years. Last week it was evident that his hours were numbered. At peace with the world and his Creator he longed to be relieved of the mortal coil. Bartel Bartell, a son of Bartel and Sadie Bartell, was born at Golden, Ill. in Adams county, on May 1, 1863. At the age of seven years he moved to Flatville with his parents. In that community he was reared and grew into young manhood. On May 7, 1888 he was united in marriage to Gebka Duitsman. Of this union five children were born, three sons and two daughters, one son dying in infancy. After 12 years of farming at Flatville, the happy family removed to Buckley, on a farm south of the village. Twenty-one years were enjoyed there. Mr. Bartell then turned the management of the farm over to his son John and he and his family removed to Gifford where the younger son, Barney, had set up a business. There he was spending the evening of his life, for nineteen years. The deceased was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church and remained faithful and steadfast until death. Besides the deeply aggrieved widow two daughters, Mrs. Ed Trusheim and Mrs. Ray Krumwiede, and two sons, John and Barney, eleven grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Hilka Martens of Mexico, Mo., mourn his death. All members of his family revered him and pronounced him a grand father, a dutiful, loving husband, of a sunny, jocular disposition, he spread good cheer and sunshine wherever he went. We never heard him utter a complaint nor a foul word. His pleasing, blessed mission will be missed, painfully and keenly.

Onarga -- Funeral services for Barney H. Bartell, 78, of Gifford, a brother of John Bartell of Buckley, were at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 12, in the Lux Memorial Chapel in Rantoul with the Rev. Melvin Blobaum officiating. Burial was in Huls Cemetery.
Mr. Bartell died at 8:55 p.m. Monday, Jan. 10, at his home.
He was born April 30, 1898, near Flatville, a son of Bartel and Gebke Duitsman Bartell. On April 8, 1923, he was married to Oral Lenora Clester of Gifford. For many years, Mr. Bartell operated Bartell's Tavern in Gifford.
Also surviving are his wife; a son, Dwight of Dallas, Tex.; two daughters, Mrs. Harold Phipps of Rantoul and Mrs. Ernest Johnson of near Rantoul; a sister, Gertrude Krumwiede of Buckley; and seven grandchildren.

AUGUSTA BOOMGARDEN
Fatal Hurts Sustained By Watseka Woman
Cut Down By Engine At Crossing
Died in 3 Hours
Augusta Boomgarden Killed When She Failed to Hear Approaching Train
Failing to hear or see the approaching northbound train which left Watseka at 611 Wednesday night in time to avoid it. Mrs. Henry Boomgarden was fatally struck by the engine of number 8 on C. & E. I. crossing at Hickory Street and died a few hours later in the Iroquois Hospital, having regained consciousness only once since the time of the accident.  Her left leg was
broken, the  right eye socket crushed and her skull fractured in several places.
Acting Coroner Madison conducted an inquest Thursday morning in the Johnso\ton & Kamp funeral parlor, where the body was brought and later in the C. & E. *. railway station. At the latter place after hearing the testimony of an eye witness, the train crew of Number 8 and the husband of the slain woman , a verdict of accidental death was returned. Those serving on the jury were; Hal Parker, foreman, Wilbur Hathaway. Fred C. Schultz, Lewis Miller, John Pierce and Winfield Scott.
    E. F. Potter, 308 West Hickory Street, a section laborer, was an eye witness to the tragedy and was the first witness called to testify at the inquest.  He stated that he and his wife had been sitting on the east porch of their house at about 6:15 o'clock Wednesday evening and noticed Mrs. Boomgarden crossing the tracks, going east, with her head down and apparently
paying no attention to the approaching train on the north main track. Suddenly as she reached the track upon which the train was traveling and when the latter was within about twenty feet of her , she glanced up and, seeing her impending danger, started to run off the track. She didn't run very fast, according to the witness, and the locomotive was soon upon her. After it
passed Mrs. Potter said to her husband,  " I think the train hit her," and later, after she had run toward the crossing, "Yes, it did ; there she is!:
Potter phoned P. J. McFall on duty at the C. & E. I railway station, and Dr. E. F. Herdien was summoned. He soon arrived, followed by Dr. R. D. Short.
In the meantime, said the witness , the woman's husband, Henry Boomgarden, had removed the body to his yard and placed a quilt under her head. When the physicians arrived and announced that she would have to be taken to the hospital at once she remonstrated, Saying, "No, I want to stay in my own house. "  These were the only words she uttered and she died in the hospital, at 9:30 that evening.
Potter was of the opinion that members of the train crew were not able to see the woman as she crossed.  He couldn't remember whether or not the whistle had been blown.
Following the testimony of Mr. Potter. The inquest was held up until the arrival of the 10:19 train, southbound, on which were the engineer of Number 8.  When the train finally arrived it was held up until the testimony of the engineer and fireman had been taken.
The engineer H. L. Martin, who lives in Danville, stated that he knew absolutely nothing about the affair. He received word at St. Anne, he said, that he had struck somebody at Watseka but didn't know any of the details.
He said that the train was going about ten or twelve miles an hour it left Watseka and that the bell was ringing but that he didn't remember whether he had sounded the whistle or not.  He was, of course, on the right side of the cab and hardly in a position to see her anyway as she was coming from the west.
    A. F. Gilbreath, of Danville, the Fireman on Number 8, was the next to testify.  His testimony was practically the same as the previous witness only he said that he might have been shoveling coal at the time of the accident, according to the usual practice when leaving a station, in which case he couldn't have seen the woman approaching.
Henry Boomgarden , husband of the slain woman, had little more to offer as the next witness. He stated that he was a teamster and had just come home from work and sat down at the table when, after taking a few mouthfuls of food, his young daughter, Gertie, screamed, "Mama's hurt!"  He then told of how he had found his wife, unconscious, lying beside the track, her head still on the ties.
Mrs . Augusta Volkens Boomgarden was the daughter of J. F. Volkens and Stina Dow, both of whom survive in Watseka, and she was born December 29, 1874, in Clifton, spending early childhood in Ashkum and Iroquois Township. She attended??? School.
On September, 18, 1893, she became the wife of Henry Boomgarden, who survives her, and had six children, Bert Boomgarden, whose present whereabouts is unknown, Mrs. Christina Charlier of Plato, Mrs. Minnie Leonard of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Freddie , Deceased, and Gertie, living at home.  She also leaves two sisters Mrs. William Peters of Kankakee, and Mrs. Delia Charlier of Watseka.
